Our Young Writers in the City are getting out and about in Launceston, and we can’t wait to see the fabulous work they’re set to produce. These young achievers are Eloise Hart, Tessa Wynne, YaYa Mackeddie, Claudia Locatelli, Grace Kenyon, and Jaspar Godden.
Have a look at Eloise’s photoblog, featuring pictures she caught during her inspiring city ventures.
After the success of last year’s Young Writers in the City program, which saw seven Hobart writers successfully complete residencies around the city, the Tasmanian Writers Centre and City of Launceston have teamed up to present the opportunity to emerging talent in the state’s north.
Writers aged 16 – 25 are undertaking a residency in Launceston’s prominent sites and buildings. Twitch Coordinator Claire Jansen said this program was a fantastic opportunity for young Launceston writers.
“The Young Writers in the City program offers you time and space to write, and you get paid for your work,” said Ms Jansen. “In the Hobart program, our young writers developed a new confidence about their work and people working at or visiting the venues loved having their places interpreted with fresh eyes.”
Launceston program venues include:
• Queen Victoria Museum at Inveresk
• Queen Victoria Art Gallery at Royal Park
• City Park
• Quadrant Mall/Dicky Whites Lane
• Civic Square
• The Gorge
• Mall
• Aquatic Centre
Writers spend two to three hours for at least eight days in their chosen venue for this period, and produce a 1500-2500 experimental essay inspired by their experience.
The residencies include payment of $300 per writer, as well as the opportunity for writers to present at the Junction Arts Festival.
